There was nothing really wrong with Assassins Creed 1, it's just the repetitive structure of missions made the unique experience feel like a chore. I picked up Assassin's Creed 2 for $40 last week and its inexpensive price made me feel like I stole it. I was anticipating a strong start that was similar to the first, and not to my surprise it was. Eventually it slowed down but when you receive your assassins robe, the improvements really begin to shine through. The characters all have their own distinctive personalities, and I can say for a fact that Ezio is more of a badass than Altaïr ever was.
